In this video we discuss how to replace a pump in our large water features.

We built a water feature pond in our garden, but now we thinking might aswell get some ornamental goldfish lol… So this was the dilema, filtration! I had a few fish tanks could almost call me a hobbyst, so I have a general idea on filtration and biological filtration. The Water feature it self has a self contained resevoir where the water is recycled through, this resevoir is submerged in the pond with about 3 inches of water cover above. Theory, is that the water is sucked through the top of the resevoir and passed through the filtration media, which is the cleaned then pumped back out into the pond. Hopefully this should work, please tell me what you think and if you have any suggestions on improvements or errors, your help is.. well helpful Thanks!

This water feature from Lowes was installed July, 2010. I elevated it on a stone base, drilled a 1-1/2″ hole in the bottom for a rubber stopper to make it easy to clean. Also installed a low-profile toilet water valve connected to the drip irrigation system so it fills automatically every time the plants get watered…it’s important to never let the pump run dry. It has run every day for a year from 7:am to 8:pm and still the original pump. A filter to keep junk away from the pump was made by cutting a small plastic basket in half to fit against the back wall over the pump and valve, then zip tied a piece of foam to the basket that was cut from a washable air filter (the outside is black foam so you don’t even notice it under the waterfall). Wild birds love to take a bath in the mini-streams on top and squirrels visit for a drink almost every day. Had a lot of algae last summer until I tried a couple 10″ strips of copper and they really seem to reduce algae growth. I’ve only cleaned it every three to four months since then, which takes about 20 minutes using a garden hose and a brush. The wire draped around the front is connected to a fence charger and controlled by a motion sensor at night to discourage raccoons…they tore out the filter and put a lot of debris in the water a couple times before I added the charger.

A short clip showing a couple of Black Caps bathing in a bird bath fed by a 4′ 6″ cast iron water pump. The water is drawn by an electric pump from a sump under the pebbles. To increase the sound of water the cast iron pump then empties out into a bucket with holes drilled in the base.
